Bio:I moved here from Livejournal in August 2007.

I'm Kirsty, a contemporary artist working in sculpture and performance art. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about what being an artist is like and what sort of people artists are. I started blogging in 2003 in an attempt to shine a little light on what daily life is like for a self-employed artist.

I also have a blog called Up All Night Again, over on my art website that's much more visual and focused on art. Fragile Tender is more of a writing and thinking space for me and although I talk about art here, I also rant about politics, religion, current events and talk about my daily life. If you'd prefer just art, then please head on over to Up All Night Again.

When people find out that I'm an artist they usually ask me what I make but it's always very hard to describe, which is another reason why I have this blog. In a nutshell, I make strange things from pins, matches, decaying fruit, salt, toffee, silk, roses, wax, plaster and fake hair (to name but a few of the materials I've used over the years). Sometimes I make objects, sometimes I perform - very little of what I make is saleable so I am currently trying to find ways to survive as an artist. At the moment I'm doing a part-time jewellery course, which I'm really enjoying and I'm wondering if I could make jewellery to fund my art or if it would just take up all my time instead.

My work tends to be about things like memory, fragility and repetition. I like little things, the stuff that other people throw away or the things that we don't notice much. I also like making obsessive art - if I can do something over and over again until my fingers are about to fall off then I am generally happy.

I also work as a freelance curator - I'm on the gallery committee for the Here Gallery (an experimental volunteer-run gallery in Bristol) and curate one or two shows there a year as well as helping with the general running of the space. While I was still at art college I set up an artists' group called ilka, which I ran for nearly three years. Despite being a sort of pagan/buddhist, I used to be involved in Greenbelt, Britain's largest Christian arts festival - I curated the visual arts exhibitions there for a couple of years but had to give it up because of ill health. I'm still interested in the connection between the spiritual and art.

I used to have a part time job as a personal assistant but I'm currently not working for pay because of my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

When I'm not making art, writing about art, curating art or thinking about art, I am busy being the mother to the Kidlet, my teenage son (who is really getting too big to be called the Kidlet on a blog). We live in a huge gothic Victorian house with my male and female partners. We have a cat called Constantine and are currently looking for a kitten to keep Constantine company after our other cat Methuselah died in December 2006.

I don't watch all that much TV (although there's a lot of good SF on at the moment, for which I'll make an exception) but I'm an avid fan of Radio 4 and podcasts. I'm a keen knitter and sometimes go along to our local Stitch n' Bitch group, I can also often be found hanging out on the Lime & Violet messageboards. I'm increasingly obsessed with my flickr account.

I'm a bookworm who believes that librarians are the secret rulers of the Universe (or should be!) Politically I'm a wishy washy liberal with a background in feminism, I'm currently very annoyed at the rise of the religious right and the gradual erosion of gay rights and women's rights in America, partly because of the potential knock-on effects globally but also because I have a lot of friends in America and I'm kind of worried about them. I love to sing. I love having deep discussions with friends. I have a really dry but frequently silly sense of humour that people sometimes don't get. I procrastinate a lot. I'm Scottish. I'm a little bit pierced and tattooed. I swear like a trooper but I'm trying to cut back. I have gothic tendencies. I talk a lot. I particularly like people who invent wacky things in their garden sheds. My own garden shed is a bit of a mess.
